What are ear seeds?

Ear seeds are a treatment based on Auricular acupuncture therapy. This is a microsystem acupuncture treatment that maps the entire body onto the ear. There is evidence of its use back to 2500 BC but it was developed further by French neurologist called Paul Nojier who noted its effects on the autonomic systems and ability to effect flight or fight responses and decrease pain. It has been used on the Battlefield for trauma including PTSD and Pain as part of the United States Department of defenses Veterans Center for Integrative pain management under the veterans health administration. There have also been protocols used to treat addiction by the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association [NADA]. It has been found effective for PTSD, Chronic pain [including phantom limb], stress, weight loss/management, addiction [including drug, alcohol or even cigarettes] and many other complaints.

How is it done..

and does it hurt?

The ear is first examined then swabbed with alcohol to cleanse and remove oils so that the seeds can adhere properly, The practitioner then affixes the tape with the seed attached to the specific points on the ear. the seeds can then apply pressure to the points for up to a week though if irritation or inflammation occurs they can be removed at any time.

How does it work?

Ear acupuncture has a balancing, homeostatic effect. Points are used to treat over and under function for example the Hunger point will work on appetites that are too large or too small and blood pressure points work for high or low blood pressure. During human development in the womb, the parts of the ear develop connection to the ear,  during development of the cranial nerves including the vagus nerve a direct connection is formed to the central nervous system, organs and muscles, which enable the control of the function of many body organs from treatments to the ear.

What about risks and side effects?

Auricular acupuncture and ear seeds are both safe and effective when performed by a board certified Acupuncturist. occasionally redness can occur from the pressure and/or allergies to metal seeds [if a metal allergy is noted alternative seeds may be used] and some sensitivities to the tape can occur but are able to be resolved at any time by removing the seeds.
